The Crisis of Cetaceans in Taiwan

Taiwan is rich in cetaceans, yet human activities have placed them at risk. This unit highlights the growing threats to their survival.

Perilous Blue Corridor

Whales and dolphins migrate annually along the Blue Corridor--a vital yet threatened lifeline. This section explores the dangers they face and highlights the crucial role whales play in ecosystems and climate balance.

Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect

Human activities have increased greenhouse gases, caus- ing global warming and climate change, which threaten marine ecosystems and cetaceans. This unit explores the greenhouse effect, the development of climate science, and resulting ecological crises.

Protecting Cetaceans: Action and Participation

The population of Taiwanese white dolphins along Taiwan's western coast is small and critically endangered. Their conservation journey, which integrates scientific research, policy advocacy, and public participation, stands as a landmark case of marine conservation in Taiwan.

The equipment and content in this unit are on special loan from the National Museum of Natural Science's exhibition Climate Action: The Era of Global Boiling, aiming to raise public awareness and inspire dialogue and concrete action.

Includes engaging interactive displays.

Listening to the Voices of Cetaceans

Cetaceans explore the ocean, communicate, and build connections through sound. Each species has its own unique vocal language--like singing in the vast sea. Come interact with our sound station and listen to their voices. Experience their intelligence and vitality, and warmly invite you to visit the exhibition in person to discover these fascinating marine creatures!

Green Lifestyle

Our daily activities, from diet and work to entertainment, are deeply intertwined with energy use, leading to inevitable greenhouse gas emissions. By making more carbon-reducing choices in our everyday lives, we can significantly contribute to carbon reduction. Let us embrace a green lifestyle together.

Citizen Scientists at Sea: Photo-ID in Cetacean Research

In Taiwan, a growing number of citizens are joining the ranks of marine science. By photographing dorsal fins, body markings, and scars, research- ers can identify individual cetaceans and monitor population trends. This method-known as Photo ID-has become a vital tool in conservation. From observation to documentation, and from images to insights, each photo taken at sea helps protect these ocean giants.
